Network congestion withdrawal delayed indefinitely on exchange
You requested a withdrawal. Hours passed. Nothing.
When network congestion spikes, exchanges face a choice: their fee estimation algorithm can underbid the priority fee, or they can deliberately delay broadcast, waiting for fees to drop. Either way, your transaction sits in limbo.
The problem is opaque by design. The exchange shows "processing." You see no hash, no mempool entry, no way to know if they have even tried.
How congestion traps your withdrawal
Ethereum and its layer-2 networks use a priority fee market. Validators select transactions offering the highest tips. During a congestion event - say, a popular NFT mint, a token launch, or a DeFi exploit - demand for block space spikes and priority fees surge.
An exchange's algorithm might have been configured for average conditions. It bids a priority fee that was reasonable an hour ago. Now it is too low. The transaction never enters a block. It sits in the mempool indefinitely, waiting for the exchange to bump the fee or for congestion to ease.
Some exchanges take a different approach. They hold the transaction internally, not broadcasting at all. They wait for congestion to subside before sending. This saves them the cost of replacing or bumping transactions. It costs you time. You cannot tell which scenario applies unless you check.
Verify network congestion yourself
You do not need to trust the exchange's status page. Use independent tools.
Mempool explorers show pending transactions waiting for confirmation. For Ethereum, visit etherscan.io and click the "Pending Txns" tab. For Base, use basescan.org. A high pending count - tens of thousands or more - indicates congestion.
Gas trackers show current priority fee recommendations. Etherscan's Gas Tracker displays Low, Average, and High priority fees. If your exchange's fee is below the Low estimate, that explains the delay.
Your exchange's transaction hash is the key. If the exchange has broadcast, you will see a transaction ID in your withdrawal history. Copy it. Paste into a block explorer. If it shows "Pending" and the gas price is below current recommendations, congestion is the bottleneck. If no hash exists, the exchange has not broadcast.
Actionable steps
Step one: confirm broadcast. Check your exchange withdrawal history for a transaction hash. No hash means the exchange is holding it. Contact support. Ask them to broadcast with a competitive fee.
Step two: use a transaction accelerator. If a hash exists and the fee is too low, third-party accelerators can prioritize your transaction. Etherscan offers a "Speed Up" feature for pending transactions you control. Exchanges sometimes block this; check if the exchange allows fee bumping from their interface.
Step three: wait for a low-congestion window. Network traffic follows patterns. Weekends often see lower activity, and late night UTC hours can be quieter. Monitor a gas tracker. When priority fees drop, the exchange's bid may become competitive, or you can ask support to rebroadcast during that window.
Step four: escalate. If the exchange cannot or will not act, file a support ticket. Reference the transaction hash. Request a manual fee bump. Some exchanges have internal escalation for stuck withdrawals.
When not to panic
Most stuck withdrawals eventually clear. Congestion is temporary. The exchange has your funds; they are not lost. The delay is mechanical.
But indefinite is the operative word. Without a hash, you cannot estimate. Without a hash, you cannot accelerate. Without a hash, you are dependent on the exchange's internal timing. That is the risk of custodial withdrawal: you surrender control over broadcast timing.
